Chair for Information Systems I (Prof. Dr. Kathrin Möslein)

The chair of Business Informatics I, especially the sector industrial information systems, focuses on the creation of the ability to innovate in industrial enterprises to strengthen their competitiveness. On the one hand the knowledge of Business Informatics in terms of information systems to support output-related business strategies is quite well developed. But on the other hand, research still remains to be conducted in the area of system support with regard to innovation-oriented  business strategies. This gap is addressed by the chair of Business Informatics in terms of teaching and research. Here, the aim is to systematically advance the knowledge in the area of “innovation support systems”. The main focus of research is on the design, the piloting and the evaluation of systems that support innovation, cooperation and leadership – the drivers of innovation in industrial enterprises and its market. Selected current research projects are:

  • Analysis of the relationship between organizational processes and radical innovations (Discontinuous Innovation Lab; in collaboration with Prof. John Bessant, Imperial College London & AIM Research, UK),
  • Analysis of the usage of prototyping as a medium for communication and motivation between teams and their environment within and outside the organization. (in collaboration with UnternehmerTUM GmbH & CLIC Research),
  • Analysis of the influence of social support software tools on idea generation and knowledge processes in the virtual organization (in collaboration with Prof. Lynda Gratton, London Business School & AIM Research),
  • Analysis of the impact of leadership systems on open innovation (in collaboration with Prof. Anne Sigismund Huff, TUM Business School & Peter Pribilla-Stiftung) and Prof. Dr. Kathrin Möslein holds the Chair of Business Informatics I at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg since 2007).

Besides the engagement in various research projects, there exist various active international research cooperations with reputable institutions like the Advanced Institute of Management Research, London Business School, the Imperial College London, the Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley and many more.

Chair for Information Systems II (Prof. Dr. Freimut Bodendorf)

The chair of Business Informatics II deals with technologies and systems of business process management, of service management and information management in enterprises and the economy. From an process oriented viewpoint, a main aspect is the creation and the support of cooperation between organizations (“e-networking”) and between people (“e-collarboration”) with the aid of information and communication sytems. Here, traditional internet technologies play a role as well as the new prospects of the web 2.0. In the service management field, the focus is on the efficient and strategic creation, selection and implementation of electronic services for the customers. There, methods to compose a full service life-cycle are developed and a procedure for a strategic evaluation of innovative services is applied. Current research projects a

    • Processes with emphasis on monitoring & controlling, information logistics, self-organization, software agents, web-services as well as intelligent und interactive objects
    • Informations with emphasis on adaption (situation, individualization), knowledge acquisition (e-learning), exchange of knowledge (e-collaboration), multimedia technologies, ontology engineering and methods of artificial intelligence
    • Services with emphasis on e-service engineering, customer interface / customer services, hybrid value creation, service oriented architecture, embedded service-systems and self-service-systems

In line with these research fields, there are also various projects with academical partners and companies as well as dissertation projects. Some examples are:

    • Autonomous processes: adaptive agent- applications and -autonomy, sponsered by the DFG
    • Efficient electronical coordination in services, FAN – research team Augsburg Nuremberg, sponsered by the DFG
    • „ACI: Ambient Customer Information“, sponsered by the Hans-Frisch-Stiftung
    • Push-Principles in E-Commerce, Project of the Forschungsverbundes Wirt-schaftsinformatik Nordbayern (FORWIN)
    • Competence Center E-Service Sciences – E-Service-Lifecycles and Service-Innovationen
    • E-Business-Management – Explanation and creation of electronical services, processes and relations
    • Knowledge based automating of negotiation  on electronical real-time markets

Prof. Dr. Freimut Bodendorf is keeper of the Chair of Information Systems II at the FAU since 1989.

Chair for Information Systems III (Prof. Dr. Michael Amberg)

The Chair of Business Informatics III is part of the business department as well as the socioscientific faculty. The research emphasis is on system development and IT- management. There, we investigate methods, models and strategies to develop, implement and operate information technology precisely. We deal with questions of profitability, quality and acceptability of IT- innovations and IT- offshoring. Furthermore we deal with the application of information technologies in knowledge and competence management. In the past we have not only been engaged in the development of conceptual suggestions for software solutions, but also realized concrete prototypes and evaluated their acceptance. Some examples are:

    • WiSo- (at) visor: Web based Student Advisory Service in consideration the specific academic requirements (http://www.advisor.wiso.uni-erlangen.de); Sponsor: Staedtler Stiftung 2005.
    • MigrationNavigator: Web based migration help for open-source-solutions (www.migrationnavigator.org); ); in colloboration with Novell 2005.
    • PersoKomp: Web based competence management for career path, career planning and human resource management (www.persokomp.org); Sponsor: Bayerisches Staats-ministerium für Wirtschaft, Infrastruktur, Verkehr und Technologie within the programm High-tech-Offensive Zukunft Bayern 2004.
